A saleswoman rearranges a display of German salami, among other meat products, at a meat shop in Berlin on January 13, 2009. German butchers now claim that salami was invented not in Italy, as is widely assumed, but in Germany. While the word “salami” originally comes from “salare”, the Italian word for “to salt”, the art of making salami was born not in Bologna, Italy, but Mecklenburg in north-eastern Germany, according to new research, published in a German newspaper on January 13.
